The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together exists a intense examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
